There are many different formats for business plans, and you will have to play around with structure and layout to find the perfect look for your company. The most important of the “what” questions deals directly with potential investors-what are your start-up costs and projected earnings over periods of time?

Next, identify your customer. Answer the question “Who?” by noting what groups of people you will target with advertising and what groups are most likely to buy your product. Also be sure to address other “who” issues. Who are your investors? Who will run the company? Who will be the employees? Who is your competition? These are all questions that a bank will ask you if you take them a business plan in hopes of getting a large business loan.

Talk about “why” questions as well, although these may be more indirectly implied within the business plan. Why is there a need for your product or service? When talking about competition, explain why your product or service is superior or why yours targets a different demographic. Investors will be asking “Why should I give this person money?” so be sure to answer that question with as many positive details as possible.

Lastly, and most importantly, answer “How?” with great detail. You’ve said what you wanted to do, who your customers would be, and why the business would be an asset to the community, but this means nothing if you don’t have a straightforward plan as to how you will go about doing this. Again, try to answer questions before they arise. Assuredly, your potential investors will still think of questions that you have not addressed, so be sure to know your plan, the business, and the market before you attempt to present your plan. Remember, don’t be too nervous. If your plan is solid and you’ve answered the previous four questions, you are well on your way to positive reactions to your business idea.

I work in a Kansas City advertising agency, and have for the past 3 years. I do not consider it selling out, like you might think.

You see, when I got into Kansas City advertising, I was not compromising a dream, so much as grasping on to the most realistic and easily achieved part of it. Advertising awards are a coveted prize for advertising agencies, although not the most important thing. The good thing about advertising awards is that they let your clients know that your ads are useful and persuasive, that they are clever and creative and make clients want to buy your products. Especially for a new, or up and coming advertising agency, advertising awards are almost like a holy grail which make a difficult, struggling business into an easy going highly successful one over night.

Advertising awards are difficult to obtain. There are so darned many clever advertisements is the problem. For a while, advertisements used to be simple, saying things like, for example, tastes great, or the best that money can buy – simple slogans which had to do little but inspire confidence that what people were getting was the best. But the internet revolution, combined with the growing cynicism of the consumer (which is right in that companies do sometimes promise things that they can’t deliver if they didn’t, advertising would be less important) makes ads so much more intricate and difficult, and advertising awards so much nicer if you can wion them. But it is much harder than it used to be.

Take, for example, that popular car ad. The guy is driving his car on a twisty road and pushes a button, and all of the sudden, the road becomes completely flat and straight forward. The implication is, and the commercial seems to say that, the car drives so totally flawlessly, that it makes the most difficult mountain road as easy to drive as a straight highway. Only, they don’t need to come out and say it at all any more. The invention of the high quality computer processing graphics that they employ allow them to show you the road actually becoming flat at the press of the drivers button. This is much more powerful than a message based on words it shows the driver actually having the power to warp reality. I mean, come on. Who doesn’t want super powers?

What happens when people become even jaded to images like that is a problem that advertisers have increasingly had to face. Certainly, consumerism has not ceased, a good news for those of us involved in business, but it is harder and harder to figure out what consumers will want. In the future, advertising awards might reward people who trade on peoples cynicism, selling products to people who believe that they are too smart to fall for advertising.

I also like the feedback given from the writers who find work through my blog. I couldnt imagine having to search for work every day. Well, actually, I can because I do search every day. I just really cant imagine relying on the search for my livelihood.

Many of the readers who visit the blog leave messages to let me know that they were hired for one project or another. These messages make my day. Im glad to know that the site is doing some good.

Unfortunately, one of my readers became offended that I use Google advertisements on my site. She wanted to know why I advertise on my blog for profit. Well, the profit is quite small. I have found that writers are not really clickers. I also think that clicking on one or two ads is not a big price for the service I provide.

This brings me to the question about blog etiquette. Many seasoned bloggers become aggravated by the site of advertisements. However, these readers should consider the purpose of the site before passing judgment.

I advertise on my site because it offers a valuable service. The reader has the option of scrolling down past the advertisements if he isnt happy with them. There is no obligation to click on an ad.

In fact, many of my readers commented that they didnt notice that I advertise on my blog until the complaint was posted on my site. Id like to thank that person for complaining. My readers are taking time to give me a few clicks now.
